School’s out for the summer, but vacation will have to wait for Little League all-star teams, which swung into District 44 tournament play this week.
Seven local leagues from Cupertino and Sunnyvale will compete in five age groups against each other as well as squads from Campbell, west San Jose, Santa Clara, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View. Teams are hopeful to reach the finals of the double-elimination tournaments, win a District 44 championship flag and advance to Section 5 tourney play against other district winners.
The major (11-12), junior (13-14) and senior (15-16) events are part of global tournaments. The most well-known is the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., for the 11-12 bracket. The 9-10 and 10-11 age groups can advance as far as the Northern California Division.
All 14 leagues in District 44 have entered teams in the 9-10 and 11-12 tourneys. There are 11 leagues represented in the 10-11 category, seven in the junior event and just two in the senior division. Tri-Cities and Santa Clara Homestead will play a best of three series to determine which team will advance.
